Electric Choice
Under Michigan Public Act 141, signed into law in June 2000, the state’s electric industry is being restructured. Customers of the state’s two largest utilities are able to select their energy supplier as of January 1, 2002. This means they may select the company that generates their electric power, although the actual transmission of the power and delivery to their home or business will still be provided and billed by the original utility.
Cooperative customers with loads of 1 MW or more will have choice starting October 10, 2010.
